Origin and history
Gannat Castle is a medieval building built around 1200 or shortly thereafter, on the northern edge of the city. It succeeds an older castral mound, located near the present site of the Church of St. Croix, whose foundations of two towers (one round, one square) were rediscovered in the 19th century. Its strategic location, in support of the urban enclosure but outside the walls, reflects its defensive and symbolic role for the city.
In 1236, the granting of a franchise charter to the bourgeois of Gannat coincided with the construction of ramparts around the city. The castle, already existing, is then integrated into this defensive system, near the north gate. Its architecture and position bear witness to the importance of Gannat as a strong position in the Middle Ages, at the crossroads of Bourbonnais and Auvergnes influences.
The building, transformed over the centuries, has lost its military vocation to become a cultural place. Since 1926, it has been included in the inventory of historical monuments and has been home to the Yves-Machelon Municipal Museum. Archaeological remains and written sources, such as those mentioned in the book Châteaux, fiefs, mots... in Bourbonnais (2004), underline its anchor in local history.
There is no document specifying the sponsors or significant events related to the castle after its construction. His later evolution, before his museum conversion, remained poorly known, although his inscription in 1926 allowed his preservation as an emblematic heritage of Allier.
