Origin and history
The Château de Goué, located in Fougerolles-du-Plessis in Mayenne, has its origins in the early 14th century, although only a round tower and walls remain of this first construction. It was entirely rebuilt in 1519 by Thomas de Goué, then enlarged around 1650. Its architecture, evoking a seated lion, features a Louis XIII façade, typical of the French Renaissance.
Over the centuries, the castle has suffered several looting and destruction. In February 1517 Patrice de Goué obtained a monitor against criminals who ransacked the estate. In April 1615 he was sacked by the soldiers of the regiment of the Knight of Nedain and attacked on 18 July 1794 by the National Guards. These events reflect the political and military turmoil in the region.
Goué Castle has been listed as a Historic Monument since November 13, 1973. This protection concerns its facades, roofs, the wooden honorary staircase, as well as interior elements such as a painted ceiling and decors of the large living room. These rankings reflect the heritage value of the site, both for its architecture and its turbulent history.
