Origin and history

Grandsaigne Castle, also known as Grandsagne, is located in the commune of Bonnat, in the department of Creuse in New Aquitaine. This fief entered the Ajasson family in the 15th century, following the marriage between Guyot Ajasson and Jacqueline de Barbançois. The site suffered several fires during the Hundred Years' War, before being consolidated during the religious wars.

In 1597, the castle took on its present appearance thanks to a campaign of works led by Hector Ajasson of Grandsagne, then gentleman of Duke François d'Alençon. The garden, attributed to André Le Nôtre, would have been built in the 17th century. In the 19th century, the north tower collapsed (circa 1820) and was rebuilt in 1926 by architect Albert Laprade, at the request of Michel Ajasson.

The estate preserves the memory of the stay of scientist Stéphane Ajasson de Grandsagne, who welcomed the young George Sand in 1828. Although private property, the castle remains visible from the outside. Its history reflects architectural transformations and family ties over centuries.
