Origin and history

The Château de Haute-Sage is a building located on the town of Haux, Gironde, in the natural region of Entre-deux-Mers. Built on a height overlooking the Garonne, it is accessible via departmental roads D10 and D239. Its architecture, evoking the late 16th or early 17th century, suggests a partially anterior origin, as evidenced by the presence of a turret containing a spiral staircase, typical of medieval buildings. The castle consists of a central building flanked by two square pavilions, with an outbuilding extending the south facade.

The castle was listed as historical monuments on 29 August 1984, a protection covering its facades, roofs and some interior chimneys. Private property, it now houses a wine estate producing wines of the appellations cadillac and first-coast-of-bordeaux. A chapel, now extinct, once existed at the southern end of the eastern outbuildings, highlighting its past as a noble house.

Access to the floors is via a straight staircase extending into a square turret. The south façade has a pilaster-framed door topped by a cornice with drops, while commons perpendicular to the house complete the whole. Some holes date from the 18th century, marking later changes. The site, although private, illustrates the architectural evolution of noble houses in Entre-deux-Mers, between ancient defensive function and wine residence.

The location of the castle, about 1 km south of the village of Haux, on a hilltop overlooking the Garonne, reflects its historical role of visual and symbolic control over the surrounding lands. Access roads, including the so-called "de Régis" road, bear witness to its integration into the local old network. Today, the castle combines architectural heritage and wine-growing activity, perpetuating a centuries-old tradition of the region.

The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its inscription among the historic monuments of Gironde. The Merimée base lists its precise address (286 Route de Courcouyac) and its Insee code (33201), confirming its territorial anchor. No information is available on any historical figures related to its construction or occupation, or on any significant events taking place there.
