Origin and history
The Château de Joussé came into being in the 15th century, when its owner obtained royal authorization in 1489 to strengthen his mansion. This first building, damaged during World War II, was finally razed shortly afterwards, leaving little trace of its original architecture. Only a bas-relief sculpted with coats of arms, coming from the double entrance door, was preserved and integrated into the façade of the house built later.
In the 17th century, a second building was erected to the west, between two towers of the medieval enclosure, which still retain some defensive elements. This house, consisting of a ground floor and a floor, is always framed by these historic towers. The roof windows were restored in 1844, marking one of the few documented architectural changes.
The castle of Joussé is partially protected under the title of the Historical Monuments: the bas-relief of the entrance door was inscribed by decree of 30 May 1928, while the two towers and the frame have enjoyed an inscription since 3 July 1992. Today, the site retains traces of its medieval and classical past, although the original mansion has disappeared.
