Origin and history

The Château de l'Ansaudière is a building located in Saint-Martin-du-Limet, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. It consists of two buildings: a 17th century rectangular house and another building, built in the 18th and 19th centuries, flanked by round towers and a square tower at the junction of the two buildings. A chapel dating from the 16th century completes the whole, while a 12-hectare park, built in 1827 by François de La Porte, surrounds the estate.

In the 16th century, the castle belonged to the Mauviel family, which provided senechaux to the Barony of Craon. In 1754 Jean Cournée de La Noë acquired the residence, and it was one of his descendants, François de La Porte, who gave him his present appearance by adding round towers and bell towers to soften the slope of the roofs. The park is also at the origin of the creation of the park, which still marks the landscape of the estate.

The castle was represented in 1872 by Tancrède Abraham in a strongwater engraving, testifying to its architectural and historical importance at that time. The oldest remains, such as the square tower, recall the successive transformations of the building over the centuries, mixing medieval heritage and more recent developments.
