Origin and history

The Château de l'Ardoise, located in Pithiviers in the Loiret, is attested from 1561. Built by the mason Pierre Dussier and the carpenter Pierre Fesset for Gouault Archambault, advisor to the king and master of the house of the deniers, it illustrates the influence of Philibert de l'Orme in his architecture. Its structure, assembled according to a rare technique of mossed and clasped wood hoops, and its roof in the shape of an overturned ship frame make it a unique example of Renaissance architectural innovation.

Designed to serve as a relay between Chambord and Fontainebleau, the castle welcomed several kings of France. Henry IV stayed there in 1602, while Louis XIV stopped there seven times between 1650 and 1687. The facades, decorated with carved motifs, and the remarkable structure bear witness to its past prestige. Although the interiors were modified and a north wing was destroyed in 1850, the monument, partially restored in 1913, has retained protected elements since 1956.

The castle also reflects the changes in its history: partially sold in the 19th century, it lost part of its original structure. Today, its facades and roofs, including those of the small building in return, are classified as Historic Monument. Its address, 3 place de l'Étape in Pithiviers, and its Insee code (45252) place it precisely in the Loiret, in the region Centre-Val de Loire.
