Origin and history

The Château de l'Argentaye, located in Saint-Lormel in the Côtes-d'Armor, was built in 1840 in a neo-classical style by architect Hamon, originally from Saint-Servan. Commanded by Marie-Ange Rioust de Largentaye, he replaced a former medieval mansion whose state of conservation was too degraded. The original project planned to incorporate the remains of the west pavilion, but this idea was abandoned. The castle has a symmetrical facade with a central forebody surmounted by a triangular pediment, and two lateral wings. An arcade gallery connects the whole to the ground floor.

The chapel Saint-René, in a neo-Gothic style, was erected in 1854 according to the plans of architect Martial Pelfresne, known for his religious achievements in Brittany. The estate also includes outbuildings (farms, supply, dovecote) and a park planted in 1835. The entrance gates and pavilions, designed in 1836, complement this harmonious ensemble, reflecting the prestigious ambition of its sponsor. The archives reveal a close collaboration between Marie-Ange Rioust de Largentaye and architects, as well as the intervention of Parisian artisans.

The seigneury of Argentaye, mentioned from the 11th century, is associated with the Rioust family of Largentaye, anobligated in 1816 in recognition of the services rendered during the Battle of Saint-Cast (1758). Jacques Pierre Rioust des Villes-Audrains, father of the sponsor, was MP, mayor and general councillor of Côtes-d'Armor. The castle, inscribed in historical monuments since 1993, illustrates Breton neoclassical architecture and its integration into a landscape of the 19th century. Protected elements include the house, park, outbuildings, chapel and entrance pavilions.
