Origin and history

The Château de la Baugisière, located in Saint-Michel-le-Cloucq in Vendée, is a historic monument registered since 1993. Built in 1741 by the knight Maximilien Boutou de La Baugisière, it replaces a former medieval mansion called primitively the Ugres, owned by the Boutou family from the 13th century. This estate owes its present name to the Bogis family, who owned it in the Middle Ages.

Maximilien Boutou de La Baugisière, squire and seigneur of the place, successively married Suzanne Fleury de La Caillère and Henriette Green de Saint-Marsault. He has three daughters: Suzanne, Thérèse and Jeanne, whose latter transmits the castle to his daughter Louise Racodet de La Guillemandière. She married Count Benigne-Germanicus Maynard of Langon, and their son, Count Bonaventure-Germanicus of Maynard, inherited.

In 1880, the estate was sold to Marquis Calixte de Jousselin and his wife Léontine de Baudry d'Asson. The castle, with its chapel and well, was listed as historical monuments in 1993 for its characteristic architecture of the 18th century, little represented in Vendée. Its talty base evokes a military influence, rare for a home of that time.

The site also includes protected features of the park and an alley, registered in 2006. The castle illustrates the evolution of the noble families of the Vendees, as detailed by Guy de Raigniac in De châteaux en logis, itineraries of the families of the Vendée (1993).
