Castle (Box A 252): inscription by order of 19 January 1999

Origin and history

The Château de la Baulme is a monument located in the municipality of Cronat, in Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Built between 1858 and 1863, it is a typical example of neo-Louis XIII architecture, combining brick and stone. Its plan includes a central body framed with two wings in return of square, while its interior features a decor inspired by the neo-Louis XVI style.

The castle was listed as historic monuments on 19 January 1999, recognizing its heritage value. Although the sources do not specify its initial use, its architectural style and location suggest a residential function, probably linked to an affluent family in the area. The available data do not mention sponsors or specific historical events.

The Saône-et-Loire region in the 19th century was marked by a rural economy and a society structured around land properties. The castles of that time often reflected the prestige of their owners, while playing a role in the local social organization. The Château de la Baulme is part of this, although its detailed history remains partially documented.
