Origin and history

The Château de la Bernarde, located in the commune of Renaison en Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is a building built during the second half of the eighteenth century. This monument illustrates the civil architecture of this period, marked by a sober and elegant style, typical of the aristocratic or bourgeois residences of the Old Regime. Its facades, roofs, as well as interior elements such as the dining room and its decor, or the wrought iron staircase, bear witness to artisanal know-how and an aesthetic concern peculiar to this time. The castle has been partially protected under the Historical Monuments since 1979, a recognition which also concerns its outbuildings (pigeons, stables, cuvage) and some interior developments.

The inscription by decree of 16 May 1979 specifically covers the facades and roofs of the castle, but also functional elements such as the stake, the entrance pavilion, or the four horse stalls of the stables. These protections underline the heritage importance of the site, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (note 5/10), with an address recorded in the Merimée database: 5491 Cht de la Bernarde, 42370 Renaison. The castle is administratively owned by the Loire department (code Insee 42182) in the former Rhône-Alpes region.

No information is available about the current use of the castle (visits, rentals, guest rooms) or its detailed history before the 18th century. Sources are limited to Monumentum data and administrative references, without reference to sponsors, architects, or significant events related to the monument. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, to which Renaison belongs, was at that time a territory marked by a rural and artisanal economy, where castles often served as secondary residences for local elites or agricultural management centres.
