Origin and history

The Château de la Borie, located in Solignac in Haute-Vienne, is a 17th-century building listed as a historical monument since 1984. Originally aristocratic residence, it is distinguished by its rectangular plan, its corbelled turrets inspired by Philibert Delorme, and a chapel integrated into its enclosure. The facades, decorated with faux mâchicoulis windows, retain their original solvages, testifying to its architectural authenticity.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the domain acquired a cultural vocation by hosting the European Cultural Centre of Encounters of the Borie-en-Limousin, dedicated to artistic residences, particularly in jazz and baroque music. Between 2011 and 2013, a seven-hectare sound garden was built there, combining landscape and sound installations, before its closure in 2014 for financial reasons. Judicial liquidation in 2015 marks a turning point.

Purchased in 2016 by a Dutch couple, Harry Struijker-Boudier and Ardi Poels, the castle turns into a contemporary art gallery and adopts a moving garden according to Gilles Clément's principles. Since 2017, he has been offering summer exhibitions and is part of the New Aquitaine Arts, Nature & Heritage Course. In 2024, his resale to Alexandra and François Trausch revived the project with a residence of artists, La Borie Art Residency, scheduled for 2025.

The estate, partially open to the public, combines historical heritage and contemporary creation. Its protected elements include the castle itself, the communes, the old chapel and the wall with its towers. The gardens, renovated in 2013 and 2017, reflect an innovative ecological and artistic approach.

Ranked a historic monument in 1984, the castle illustrates the evolution of the uses of heritage buildings from private residence to cultural diffusion. Its recent history, marked by financial challenges and bold conversions, makes it an example of the dynamic preservation of heritage in France.
