Origin and history

The Château de la Briantais came into being in the 17th century, when the Pointel family, the Malouin shipowners, acquired the estate to monitor their fleet in Saint-Malo Bay. In 1666, Jacques Pointel built a manor house, whose ruins remain today. The estate changed hands several times in the 18th century, notably to the Picot de Prémesnil and Collar families, before being confiscated during the French Revolution.

In 1818, the estate was bought by the Périer de Hauterive family, then by Eugene Sully-Brunet in 1850. The latter had the present castle built between 1850 and 1864, replacing the former mansion while retaining a bell tower inspired by Saint Malo City Hall. The English-speaking park, built on 27 hectares, has factories such as a chapel (1778) and a temple of Love, offering stunning views of the Rance estuary.

Acquired in 1888 by Charles Émile La Chambre, the castle is enlarged with two lateral wings before 1900. In 1975, Guy La Chambre, former minister and mayor of Saint-Malo, left the estate to the Diocesan Association of Rennes, which gave it in 1999 to the City of Saint-Malo. Since then, the castle and its park have hosted cultural events (concerts, exhibitions) and the annual flower market in May. Ranked a historic monument in September 2022, it retains its original interior decorations and neo-Normanian outbuildings.

The site also includes the ruins of the 17th century mansion, an old farm with ciderry and barn, as well as a historic vegetable garden. The park, open to the public, is a popular place for walking, with statues, fountains and terraces offering perspectives on Saint-Malo, Dinard and the Rance tidal factory. Its history reflects the evolution of the Malouin elites, from 17th-century shipowners to 19th-century bourgeois families.

The protection for historical monuments, obtained in 2022, covers the house, the outbuildings (gateway, government, farm), the old chapel, the ruins of the original mansion, and the entire park with its factories. The castle remains a symbol of the architectural and landscape heritage of Brittany, mixing maritime heritage, local history and exceptional natural setting.
