Origin and history
The chateau de la Clairière is a medieval mansion located at the place known as la Clairière, in the commune of Saint-Maurice-la-Soutraine, in the department of Creuse. This monument, classified among the castles of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, preserves architectural traces marked by its past, including defensive elements and a historical dovecote.
In the 16th century, one of the castle's houses had two corner turrets and a frontal staircase, characteristic of the architecture of the period. The fief then enjoyed the right of fortification and dovecote, suggesting strategic or seigneurial importance. The dovecote, still visible today, bears a stone engraved with possible dates 1671 or 1691 and a monogram "M P", which could come from a use.
Although the additional fortifications are no longer visible, their past existence is attested by the privileges accorded to the fief. The castle thus illustrates the evolution of medieval manors in New Aquitaine, between residential and defensive functions, while integrating symbolic elements such as the dovecote, a marker of nobility and economic power.
