Origin and history

The Château de la Freudière is a building located in La Chevrolière, in the Loire-Atlantique department, in Pays de la Loire. Built in 1765 by the Parisian architect Pierre Contant d'Ivry for Julien Pépin de Belle-Isle, head of the naval armies, it replaces a former mansion. This castle, conceived as a "country house", was completely destroyed by a fire in 1794 during the Vendée wars.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Jean-Baptiste Pépin de Belle-Isle, son of Julien, undertook the reconstruction of the castle. The works are led by the Dutch architect Chagneg. A minor restoration was then carried out between 1872 and 1874 by architect Lenoir. The monument was finally listed as a historic monument in 1990, recognizing its heritage importance.

The Château de la Freudière is associated with French maritime history, notably through the figure of Julien Pépin de Belle-Isle, knight of the royal and military order of Saint-Louis. Its architecture, marked by successive reconstructions, reflects the stylistic evolutions and historical upheavals of the region, including the Salesian conflicts.
