Origin and history

The Gardie Castle is located on the Puech de la Gardie, a hill with panoramic views of Albi and the Tarn valley. From the 10th century on, this strategic site houses a wooden castral motte surrounded by a ditch attesting to an early military occupation. Although modest (without low court), this fortification marked the beginning of a seigneurial presence on the site, before disappearing in the 11th century.

The current castle was built in the 16th century, replacing medieval structures with a stone building. The main house body, of square plan, is flanked by a corner tower and bent from a roof with four panels of tiles. The partially walled door windows and outbuildings around an inner courtyard testify to its Renaissance architecture. Access is via a 17th-century portal, decorated with doric pilasters and a triangular pediment.

The site thus illustrates a historical stratification, combining traces of a high medieval occupation with Renaissance elements. Its dominant location, chosen for its defensive and symbolic role, reflects the evolution of construction techniques and power stakes in southwestern France between the 10th and 17th centuries.
