Origin and history

The Château de la Grande Haie, located in Désertines in the department of Mayenne, is a 19th century building. It is distinguished by its architecture marked by two towers and a pavilion, as well as by curved doors and windows. A driveway, formerly lined with beech trees at the end of the 19th century, leads to the Fougerolles-du-Plessis road, highlighting the landscape importance of the estate.

The estate is associated with Józef Konstanty Ramotowski (1812–88), a Polish military who settled there in 1836 after his marriage to Constance Aline Guesdon de Beauchesne, widow of Henri de La Broise. Their son, Leopold Thadée Ramotowski, born in Desertines in 1841, became general. A particular feature of the site is a small brick oratory, erected at the entrance of the alley in 1870 by Mrs. Ramotowska in fulfilment of a vow, testifying to the family and religious history of the place.

The castle appears in ancient cartographic sources under the names Bois de Gondain (Hubert Jaillot) and La Branlardière (Carte de Cassini), reflecting its historical anchor in the region. Although the lords of the place are not mentioned, its architectural heritage and its links with the Ramotowski family make it a notable monument to the Mayen heritage.
