Origin and history

The chateau de la Grenottiere is a building located in the commune of La Chapelle-Anthenaise, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. Although described as a "castle", the historical sources, notably Abbé Angot, evoke a mansion accompanied by a farm on this site, without additional architectural or chronological details.

The references are mainly from the Dictionnaire historique, topographie et biographie de la Mayenne (1900-1910), written by Alphonse-Victor Angot and Ferdinand Gaugain. This document ranks the site among the seigneurial or notable properties of the region, but does not detail its origin, its transformations, or the families that may have occupied it. The absence of specific dates or anecdotes makes it difficult to reconstruct its precise history.

In the rural context of the Mayenne in the 19th and 20th centuries, master houses such as the Grenotière were often associated with farming. They served as residences for landowners or wealthy farmers, playing a central role in local economic and social organization. These buildings, sometimes referred to as "châteaux" by local use, reflected a marked social hierarchy, without however presenting the defensive or lavish features of medieval or Renaissance castles.
