Origin and history
Château de la Grézille is an iconic building located in Ambillou-Château, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, with architectural traces dating from the thirteenth, fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. This monument is distinguished by its duality: a castle with facades and roofs registered since 1988, and a church partially in ruins, classified with its moats and its ground since 1992. These elements illustrate its evolution throughout the centuries, mixing defensive, religious and residential functions.
The church, built in the 13th and 15th centuries, bears witness to the spiritual importance of the site, while the castral parts of the 15th and 17th centuries reflect military and seigneurial adaptations. The moat and stair turret, still visible, recall its strategic role in the local landscape. In medieval times, castles such as that of the Grézille served as centres of power, combining protection, administration and community life, in an area marked by agriculture and river trade.
Successive protections for historic monuments (1988 and 1992) highlight the heritage value of the site, preserving both its architectural structures and its castral right-of-way. Today, the castle and its church offer an overview of the history of Angelvin, between feudal heritage and Renaissance transformations, in a rural setting characteristic of Maine-et-Loire.
