Origin and history
The Heruppe Castle was built between 1913 and 1916 by the English architect Walter Cave for Count Pierre de Vieil Castel. This house, of massé plan, is distinguished by its English style, with brick facades and small tiled bays with white woodwork. The interior is organized into several levels: a half-storey basement dedicated to services, a ground floor housing living room, dining room and library, a floor reserved for the rooms, and a floor of upholstery formerly occupied by the servants. The castle is located in a wooded and planted park, supplemented by an old farm serving as communes.
Together, including the house, the avenue and the gardens, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 23 October 2002. This classification not only protects the building, but also the floors, walls and amenities of the estate. The castle illustrates British architectural influence in Normandy at the beginning of the twentieth century, while reflecting the aristocratic lifestyle of the time, with distinct spaces for masters and servants.
