Origin and history

Château de la Matray is a building located in Souvigny, in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It replaces an old strong house, probably dating back to the 16th century, which was built on an older work known since the 14th century. The present complex, very redesigned in the 17th century, consists of a two-storey rectangular main building, flanked by two wings in return of square, forming a U-shaped plan. A four-level square turret completes the building, surrounded by water moats crossed by a dormant bridge.

The estate is surrounded by a treed enclosure that preserves the remains of two round towers. This castle, partially listed as historical monuments by decree of 16 April 1975, illustrates the architectural evolution of the fortified houses in Bourbonnais, moving from a defensive vocation to a more comfortable seigneurial residence.

The old strong house, whose existence is attested to in the 14th century, bears witness to the strategic importance of Souvigny and his region during the Middle Ages. The major transformations of the 16th and 17th centuries reflect the adaptations to the residential and aesthetic needs of the Renaissance and classical periods, while preserving defensive elements such as moats and enclosure towers.
