Origin and history

The Château de la Montchevalleraie, located in the delegated commune of Aviré (Maine-et-Loire), was built from 1780. It is distinguished by its U-shaped architecture, made of schist and bellows, and a south facade adorned with a complex serlian-shaped skylight, integrated into a pediment in the middle of a hanger. This monument reflects the architectural style of the late eighteenth century, typical of noble residences of Anjou.

The park and gardens of the castle span more than 6 hectares and house remarkable species, such as giant redwoods, cedars of the Himalayas and Virginia tulip trees. These green spaces, inventoried by the Maine-et-Loire departmental council and the Committee des Parcs et Jardins de France, underline the landscape importance of the estate. Their botanical diversity makes it a place of ecological and historical interest.

In 2013, the castle won the Historic Heritage label awarded by the Vieilles Maisons Françaises (VMF), recognizing its architectural and cultural value. Since 2019, it also hosts a contemporary art journey created by the sculptor Jimmix, known for his monumental works, adding a modern artistic dimension to this site full of history.

The castle has been a reception place for prominent personalities, such as Marcel Lamy, former director of the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. The latter regularly organized events in honour of singer Luis Mariano, whose anniversaries in Aviré were reported by the press of the time. These meetings illustrate the social and cultural role of the castle in the 20th century.
