Origin and history

The Château de la Mothe, located in Ussel en Corrèze, is a historical monument dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. It underwent major changes in the 18th and 19th centuries, giving it a hybrid architecture, combining medieval elements and more recent additions. The castle is surrounded by remains of moat and a circular enclosure, characteristic of medieval fortifications. A rectangular three-level tower dating from the 15th century is integrated into a rectangular house body, itself flanked by a round tower and a square tower. A hemicycle pole precedes the square stairway tower, backed by the southern façade of the former dungeon.

The rectangular tower, the oldest part of the castle, preserves ground bays of the 15th century as well as two steeples on its north face. Inside, a wooden staircase and a Gothic fireplace on the first floor testify to its medieval heritage. The modifications of the 18th and 19th centuries introduced neo-Gothic elements, such as woodwork and a fireplace on the ground floor, as well as Louis XIII and Louis XVI decorations on the first floor, including a woodwork, a fireplace and a ceiling.

The castle of the Mothe was partially classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 18 December 1980. The protected elements include the facades and roofs of the rectangular tower, the wooden screw staircase, the Gothic fireplace on the first floor, as well as several rooms with their decor, such as the small dining room with neo-Gothic woodwork, the billiard room with Louis XIII decor and a Louis XVI room adjacent to the library.
