Origin and history

The Château de la Motte in Bretteville-l'Orgueilleuse, located in Calvados in Normandy, has its origins in the 14th century, when a first building was mentioned on this site. This strategic place welcomed kings of France such as Charles VII, Francis I, Henry II and Henry IV, highlighting its historical and political importance throughout the centuries.

The present building was rebuilt in the second half of the 17th century for Jean de Cairon, before being profoundly redesigned in the first half of the 18th century, when it took on its present appearance. After the destruction suffered during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, the castle was restored to preserve its architectural heritage.

Ranked a historic monument since 26 March 1973, the Château de la Motte protects its facades, roofs, entrance wall with gate, as well as remarkable interior elements. These include living rooms, fireplaces decorated with woodwork, and a cartrier on the second floor. These protections testify to the richness of its decor and its history.

The castle changed owners in 1984, marking a new stage in its contemporary history. Today, there remains an emblematic example of Normandy's Southern heritage, mixing medieval heritage, classical transformations and memory of modern conflicts.

Located at the address 10 Rue de Caen in the delegated municipality of Bretteville-l Its listing in the inventory of historical monuments makes it a protected site, representative of the modern era in Lower Normandy.
