Origin and history
Château de la Motte-Grollier is a building located in the commune of Durtal, Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built between the 17th and 19th centuries, it embodies the residential architecture of this period, combining classical influences and stylistic evolutions specific to each era. The castle is representative of the seigneurial or bourgeois mansions that have marked the Angevin landscape, often linked to the farm or to a secondary residence function for wealthy families.
In the Pays de la Loire region, and particularly in Anjou, the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries were marked by a dynamic rural economy, centred on agriculture, viticulture and artisanal activities. The castles of this period often served as administrative centres for agricultural estates, while reflecting the social status of their owners. Their presence also reflects the social and economic transformations of the region, between the former regime, revolution and progressive industrialization.
These monuments, like the Motte-Grollier, were places of local power, but also spaces of life and representation for rural elites.
