Origin and history
The Pannonie Castle is a building located in the municipality of Couzou, in the Lot department in Occitanie region. Although his period of construction was not specified, he was associated with a long family history, notably that of the Vidals, owners of the premises from 1685 to 1886. This castle is distinguished by its artistic heritage, marked by the acquisition in 1780 of a collection of paintings on wood and canvas from the Château de Saint-Sulpice, integrated with its interior decor.
In 1780, Antoine Vidal de Lapize, a member of the owner family, enriched the castle by transferring pictorial works from another domain, thus demonstrating the taste of the era for sumptuous decors and artistic collections. These elements today contribute to the heritage value of the site, which combines architecture and art.
The Pannonie Castle has been protected as a historical monument since 20 July 1992 for its building, while its park and outbuildings were registered on 27 December 2012. These rankings highlight the cultural and historical importance of the estate, both for its architecture and for its landscaped, preserved and enhanced environment.
The sources available, notably the works of Catherine Didon and Jean Calmon, as well as the references of the bases Mérimée and Patrimonies Midi-Pyrénées, offer complementary insights into its history and evolution. These documents allow the castle to be placed in its regional context and to understand its role in the local heritage of the Lot.
