Origin and history

The Château de La Plaze, located in Omps en Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is an 18th-century building erected in 1783. It replaces an old 16th century castle-fortress, then in ruins, and embodies the transition to a classical architectural style. This manor house, designed as a pleasure house, is distinguished by its preserved interior decorations and terraced garden inspired by Italian models.

In the 19th century, artist William Laparra marked the history of the castle by adding paintings of landscapes in Italian taste, integrated with medallions of the pieces. These works, combined with 18th-century woodwork and stucco, illustrate the evolution of artistic tastes between the two epochs. The estate also preserves a barn and communes, typical of seigneurial properties transformed into country residences.

Ranked a historic monument in 2002, La Plaze Castle bears witness to both the medieval heritage of the region and the aesthetic transformations of the 17th and 19th centuries. Its architecture, combining classical rigor and Italian influences, makes it a remarkable example of the Cantalian heritage, linked to local history and the social changes of the Ancien Régime and the 19th century.
