Origin and history

The Château de la Porte is an 18th century building built from 1776 by Claude de Loynes d'Autroche, on the municipalities of Sandillon and Saint-Cyr-en-Val, in the Loiret. The chapel of the estate was completed in 1785, completing an architectural complex characteristic of the natural region of the Loire Valley. Located at about 100 meters above sea level, the castle is accessible by the departmental road 14 and is part of a landscape marked by rivers and agricultural lands.

The estate changed owners over the centuries: Count Bernard de Poncins owned it at the end of the 19th century. In 1992, the castle was included in the inventory of historic monuments, and in 1995, it was classified as a heritage property. In 2005, businessman Claude Bébéar acquired the estate, ensuring its preservation. The painter Charles Pensée immortalized the estate in watercolours made between 1850 and 1860, testifying to its cultural importance.

The castle of La Porte illustrates the aristocratic architecture of the end of the Ancien Régime, with a chapel and outbuildings organized around a park. Its inscription and classification as historical monuments underline its role in local and regional history. The estate, shared between two municipalities, reflects the territorial and social dynamics of the Loire Valley, between built heritage and preserved natural landscapes.
