The tower (Case E 810): inscription by order of 22 December 1986
Origin and history
The castle of the Quintaine, located in Panazol in New Aquitaine, is a historical monument whose 15th century stair tower is the only medieval vestige still standing. This architectural vestige, flamboyant Gothic style, is distinguished by a door adorned with an arch in a braid surmounted by a flower, framed with columnettes ending in carved pinnacles. Inside, a screw staircase rests on a finely worked polyhedral base, while the double and chamfered side doors are covered with a single vault.
The stairway tower, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 22 December 1986, bears witness to the architectural importance of the site. The main house body, for its part, was completely rebuilt in the 18th century, then modified by additions to the 19th century. These successive transformations reflect the evolution of needs and tastes throughout the centuries, while preserving this rare example of late Gothic art in Limousin.
Today, the castle of the Quintaine is located at the 19th of the eponymous street in Panazol, in the department of Haute-Vienne (87). Although only the tower is protected under Historic Monuments, the site maintains an accurate and documented location, assessed as very satisfactory by available sources. Its hybrid architecture, combining medieval heritage and modern redevelopments, makes it a unique testimony to regional history.
