Origin and history

The Château de la Rolphie, located in Coulounieix-Chamiers in the Dordogne, finds its origins on a site occupied since Antiquity by a Gallo-Roman villa, whose remains (columns and capitals) were found. In the Middle Ages, a fortified den was erected, probably destroyed during the Anglo-French wars. These conflicts, which marked the region between the 14th and 15th centuries, left ruins quickly replaced by a new construction.

At the beginning of the 16th century, a Renaissance mansion was built on previous foundations. This building consists of a house body flanked by two corbelled turrets, characteristic of the civil architecture of the period. A gallery of ground pilasters, connected by flats, precedes a square pavilion serving as a chapel. The latter, remarkable, is decorated with twelve Corinthian columns, showing an early classical influence. The vaulted cellars, still visible, recall the defensive or storage arrangements of previous eras.

The castle was officially classified as historical monuments by decree of 16 December 1947, thus recognizing its heritage value. This classification protects the entire building, including its interior and exterior architectural elements. Today, the site maintains a precise location (1430 B La Rolphie, 24660 Coulounieix-Chamiers), although its access to the public or its current uses (visits, events) are not detailed in the available sources.

Sources also mention the presence of Gallo-Roman remains on the site, highlighting a continuing occupation since ancient times. These discoveries, though fragmentary, suggest the strategic or residential importance of the place throughout the centuries. The castle thus illustrates a superposition of historical periods, from ancient origins to the Renaissance, to medieval destructions.
