Origin and history
La Roque Castle is a medieval building located in the Tarn department, on a rocky spur overlooking the Dadou Valley. Its origins may date back to the Carolingian era, although the current remains, such as a square tower of the 11th or 12th century and walls of the 12th and 13th centuries, bear witness above all to its importance in the Middle Ages. It was the centre of the seigneury of Arifadès, covering the communes of Arifat, Saint-Antonin-de-Lacalm and Le Travet.
The castle belonged to a younger branch of the House of Montoire-Vendôme, lords of Castres, before being sold between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century. Today, there remains only a square tower of 7 meters side and ruins of walls, testifying to its initial rectangular plan of 50 meters by 20. Since 2016, the association Castelroc en Arifadès has been working for its value through volunteer projects and cultural activities.
The archives mention the castle under various names, such as "La Roque", "Laroque d'Arifat" or "Laroque-Travanet", reflecting its central role in medieval seigneury. The excavations and restoration work have allowed a better understanding of its spatial organization and architectural evolution, although many shades persist on its exact history.
The site is now an active heritage site, managed by a member association of the Rempart Union. It attracts visitors for its history, remains and activities, while remaining a symbol of the medieval heritage of the region. Publication Discovering the Château de la Roque (2018) compiles recent research on this emblematic Tarn monument.
