Origin and history
Château de La Salle is a medieval building located in Meillers, in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from the 13th century, it was enlarged at the end of the 15th century, maintaining a homogeneous and authentic architecture. Its bodies of buildings, organized in cross plan, are reinforced by gable walls and circular foothills at each angle, characteristic of this period.
The castle preserved Gothic elements, such as bays and an entrance door, as well as its moats. Inside, there are 15th-century monumental fireplaces and wood-paned ceilings. The ensemble, including the courtyard of honour and interior decorations, was listed as historical monuments by order of 7 November 2000.
This monument illustrates the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with late additions like 18th century chimneys. Its exceptional conservation makes it a rare testimony of the Bourbon castles, as highlighted in the book Châteaux, fiefs, mots, fortified houses and manor houses in Bourbonnais (2004).
