Origin and history

The Château de la Salle is a medieval building located in Meillers, in the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 13th century, it illustrates the defensive architecture of this period with a cross plan, gable walls and circular foothills at angles. Its moat and its honorary courtyard, as well as four monumental chimneys inside, testify to its historical importance and its architectural evolution.

Enlarged at the end of the 15th century, the castle went through the centuries before being fully inscribed in historical monuments by decree of 7 November 2000. This protection covers the entire site, including its interior decorations and surroundings, highlighting its heritage value. Its spatial organization and defensive elements reflect the successive adaptations of the Bourbon castles between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The location of Meillers, in Bourbonnais, places this castle in a territory marked by a dense feudal history. Local lords played a central role in land administration and population protection, while buildings such as the Hall served as both a noble residence and a symbol of power. The recent listing of historic monuments guarantees today the preservation of this emblematic heritage.
