Origin and history

The Château de la Valette is an old house built in the Velay during the second half of the 16th century. This type of building emerges in response to disturbances caused by looters and military troops, requiring a robust architecture close to the medieval forts. The house, of massed plan, is flanked by two circular towers framing a higher barlong massif, while guns adapted to the armaments of the time reinforce its defensive vocation. Isolated decorative elements inspired by the Renaissance reflect a desire to adapt to contemporary artistic trends.

Inside, the castle preserves painted 17th century wall decorations, notably in the stairwell and chapel. These frescoes, although after the initial construction, illustrate the aesthetic evolution of the monument over the centuries. The building, representative of Velay's fortified houses, thus reflects the military and social concerns of its time, between defensive necessity and aspiration for a certain refinement.

The Château de la Valette was listed as historical monuments by order of 20 March 2006. This protection covers the entire building, including its painted decorations and exterior tower. Official recognition underlines its heritage importance, both for its hybrid architecture and for its artistic testimonies of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
