Origin and history
The Château de la Villedieu-de-Comblé is a historical monument built over three centuries, from the 15th to the 17th century. Located on horseback in the communes of La Mothe-Saint-Heray and Sainte-Eanne (Deux-Sèvres), it is referenced in the Merimée base under the code Insee 79184, in the former Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine. Its approximate address, coming from GPS coordinates, places it near Rue du Moulin Rond in Sainte-Eanne, although its exact location is subject to a location deemed "passable" (note 5/10) by the contributors.
Available sources, including Monumentum, indicate that the castle is classified or listed under Historic Monuments, without specifying the exact date of such protection. The protected elements appear to be related to the municipality of Sainte-Eanne, but no detailed architectural or historical description is provided in the data consulted. The monument does not have up-to-date practical information about its access to the public, its tourist vocation (visits, rentals, guest rooms) or its current state.
At the time of its construction, between the 15th and 17th centuries, this region of Poitou was marked by a rural and seigneurial economy. The castles of this period often served as noble residences, administrative centres for the surrounding lands, or symbols of local power. Their architecture reflected military (defence) and social (comfort) developments, although the specificities of the Château de la Villedieu-de-Comblé were not documented in the source text. The local population lived mainly in agriculture and crafts, in a context marked by the wars of Religion (XVI century) and then by the consolidation of royal power under Louis XIII and Louis XIV.
