Origin and history
The Château de la Villouyère, located in Vignoc en Ille-et-Vilaine, is a building of the middle of the eighteenth century, built in brick with frames of tuffeau bays. Its architecture is inspired by Rennes private hotels, with an ordered six-span facade, a central forebody, and a roll-up sewer roof. Two ground friezes adorn the facade, interrupted by the keys of the bays. This castle replaces a mansion attested since the 15th century, transformed by Guy de la Motte-Piquet, local lord and councillor in the Parliament of Brittany.
The monument underwent modifications in the 19th century, including the addition of skylights and attic layout. It has been listed as a historical monument since 27 August 1997, protecting its home, commons and fence. The Regional Conservation of Historic Monuments of Brittany highlights its link with architect Gabriel, a major figure in the French classical style, whose influence is reflected in the Rennes reconstructions of the period.
The castle is located in the center of the department of Ille-et-Vilaine, south-east of the village of Vignoc, in a rural Breton setting. Its massed plan and sober decor reflect the adaptation of urban codes (private hotels) to a provincial seigneurial context. Although its exact location is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10), its official address is 5163 La Basse Cour, 35630 Vineyard.
