Origin and history
The Château de La Volpilhère is a ruined building perched on a mound overlooking the Brezons valley, on the town of Saint-Martin-sous-Viguroux, in the department of Cantal. It consists mainly of a rectangular tower of four floors, with machicolis, to which was joined a house body in the seventeenth century. Two towers and a monumental staircase with double ramp completed this architectural ensemble, today partially destroyed.
The property was originally owned by Gasc's family, before passing into the hands of the family of Greil de La Volpilhère, which retained possession until 1793. In that year, the castle suffered major degradation during revolutionary disturbances, leaving the places largely devastated. Despite its state, the site remains accessible to visitors today.
Historical sources mention the castle in books such as the Dictionnaire statistique du département du Cantal de Jean-Baptiste de Ribier du Châtelet, highlighting its local importance. No other specific information on its use or occupants before the 17th century is available in the texts consulted.
