Origin and history

The Château de La Voulte-sur-Rhône is an iconic Renaissance monument erected in the 14th century. Located on a rocky promontory, it overlooks the Rhône valley as well as the entrance to the Eyrieux valley. This strategic positioning gave him a defensive role and a breathtaking view of the surroundings, typical of medieval buildings adapted to the steep reliefs of the region.

During the Second World War, the castle suffered significant damage, marking its recent history. Despite these destructions, there remains a major architectural testimony of the Renaissance period in Ardèche, integrating defensive and residential elements characteristic of the period.

The chapel of the castle, called "the chapel of princes", was classified as historic monuments on 16 August 1923, recognizing its exceptional heritage value. The rest of the castle was included in the inventory of historical monuments on May 31, 1927, consolidating its protection and preservation for future generations.

Built in a context where castles served as both fortresses and seigneurial residences, this monument illustrates the evolution of construction techniques and strategic needs between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its architecture also reflects the influence of cultural and commercial exchanges along the Rhône, a major axis of circulation in Europe.
