Origin and history

La Maison de Lachaux is a mansion located in the commune of Carlat, in the Cantal department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This small castle, of elongated plan and flanked by two towers, is distinguished by its dovecote in wood covered in pavilion, as well as by a posterior tower housing a vaulted suillarde on the ground floor. Its modest architecture reflects the rural buildings of that time, intended for local notables such as justice officers or landowners.

The lintel of the entrance door bears an inscription attesting to the construction of a mansion in 1660 for Jean Benech, notary of profession, and his wife Marguerite Verdier. This detail suggests that the home was linked to an affluent family of the rural bourgeoisie, without its subsequent history being documented in available sources. The castle is not visited today, preserving its private character and architectural authenticity.

The site is mentioned as a "draft" in the sources consulted (Wikipedia, internal data), indicating a lack of in-depth research on its past. No information is available on any changes, changes in ownership or major historical roles after the 17th century. The house nevertheless illustrates the vernacular heritage of Cantal, marked by hybrid constructions between manor and farm.
