Origin and history
The Château de Lafage, located in the department of Aude in the Occitanie region, is a building whose origin dates back to at least the sixteenth century, period of its main construction. Today, there is only one circular-angle turret left, vestige of a larger defensive structure. This tower, of summative construction with seats in medium aircraft, was equipped with six rectangular cannons and a shoulder, testifying to its military role. The tracks of the courtesies, the enclosure walls that once connected the defensive elements, are still visible at its base, where the access door also opened.
The alleu de Lafage, mentioned as early as 960 in historical texts, suggests an old occupation of the site, long before the construction of the present castle. The turret, the only remaining part, was acquired by the commune and transformed into a water reservoir, thus losing its original defensive function. Partially classified as historical monuments in 1948, it illustrates the modest military architecture of the Renaissance in this region. Its present state, without roof and interior stairway, reflects the transformations and gradual abandonment of this type of local fortifications.
The tower of the Château de Lafage, a communal property, is distinguished by architectural details such as a cornice profiled in quarter-round and cannon trees arranged at low height. These elements, although simple, reveal an adaptation to the headquarters techniques of the time. The site, now devoid of a clear residential or tourist function, retains a heritage value linked to the medieval and modern history of the Aude. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underlines its importance as a witness to local defensive systems, despite its fragmentary state.
