Origin and history

The Château de Lamothe is a monument located in the commune of Puycapel in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. Although mentioned in the 14th century, he never had a military role. He was distinguished by his uninterrupted family transmission from Roquefort to Gausserand and then to Bonnafos in 1713. This castle escaped revolutionary destruction in 1793 thanks to Joseph Timothy of Bonnafos, veteran of the American War of Independence.

The castle, which has been listed as historical monuments since 1993, was renovated in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is organized around a central courtyard surrounded by agricultural buildings and a fountain. West wing, romantic style, incorporates a tower and neogothic elements. The large living room was designed by Henri Rapine, chief architect of historical monuments.

Located on the edge of the departmental road D66, linking Calvinet to Cassaniouze, the castle of Lamothe illustrates the architectural and family evolution of a preserved rural heritage. Its registration in 1993 underlines its historical and cultural importance in the region.
