Origin and history

The Château de Lascroux, also known as Las Croux, is a 4th quarter-century building located in Cromac, Haute-Vienne, New Aquitaine. It replaces an old seigneurial house of the 15th century, of which a wall and two turrets remain. Built in 1860 on a rocky spur overlooking the Benaize Valley, it has been redesigned several times, notably between 1877 and 1907, incorporating various architectural elements (neo-gothic, Louis XIII, neo-rustic).

In 1893, the landscaper limougeaud Nivet drew a landscaped park on the north side, while architect Jules Martin enlarged the house around 1897-1900, adding an orangery (1905) and a pavilion (1907). The top doors of the dining room were painted by Henri Tayan in 1899. The estate, including buildings and park, is listed for historical monuments on November 30, 2000.

The castle illustrates the evolution of aristocratic residences in the 19th century, mixing medieval heritage and stylistic innovations. Its park, stables, and neo-Gothic gate reflect the eclectic tastes of the era. The site, always private, is open to the public and managed by the descendants of the historic owners.

Sources mention two spellings (Lascroux and Las Croux), as well as a dedicated website (las-croux.fr). The castle is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code INSEE 87053 (Haute-Vienne), with an approximate GPS location at the Moulin de Las Croux.
