Origin and history

Libouriac Castle is an emblematic building of eclectic architecture, built in the last quarter of the 19th century in Béziers, in the Hérault. Listed as historical monuments since 1995, it is distinguished by its style representative of bourgeois tastes of the end of the century, combining classical influences and technical innovations.

The building of the castle was commissioned by Marie Lagarrigue, wife of Abel Gaujal, to architect Louis Garros. It replaces an old destroyed castle, on an estate inherited from his uncle, Jean-François Mas. The building, completed in 1885 as indicated by the date engraved on its façade, is delivered fully furnished and equipped shortly after its own electrical production, sign of modernity.

The surrounding park is designed by renowned landscapers Denis and Eugene Bühler, adding an aesthetic and functional dimension to the estate. The castle, its outbuildings (chapel, stables, wine cellar, etc.) and its park have been protected since 1995, demonstrating their heritage and historical value.

The estate reflects the history of the families who owned it, such as the Gayon or Dom Bédos de Celles, before its reconstruction. Today, it illustrates both the fascist of the Hérault wine bourgeoisie and the evolution of architectural and landscape techniques of the late 19th century.
