Origin and history
The castle of Lozé is an 18th century building located in La Haie-Traversaine, in the department of Mayenne. It is 500 metres from the village, on a peninsula formed by the Mayenne and Colmont rivers. Its architecture, described as large and square, without particular ornaments, reflects a sober and functional construction for the time.
According to Abbé Angot, an ancient and majestic driveway leads to the castle, which bears the Latin inscription Sat morituro. This enigmatic sentence adds a mysterious dimension to the history of the place. The castle also served as a refuge in 1871, when sisters of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, accompanied by an orphanage, found asylum there to escape the disturbances of the Paris Commune.
The site is mentioned in archives as early as 1458 under the name of the village of Losé en Oisseau, then as a hamlet or village of Lozé on old maps, including that of Cassini. These historical references highlight its local importance throughout the centuries. The castle is also associated with Gabriel Tripier de Lozé, although its exact role is not detailed in the available sources.
The monument is cited in the Dictionnaire historique, topographie et biographie de la Mayenne (1900-1910) d'Alphonse-Victor Angot et Ferdinand Gaugain. This dictionary, based on archives such as the Cartular d'Evron, confirms its anchoring in regional history, while remaining discreet on architectural details or successive owners.
