Origin and history

Lugans Castle, located in Gaillac-d'Aveyron in the department of Aveyron (Occitanie region), is a building whose origins date back to at least the thirteenth century. Built according to a quadrangular plan typical of the Rouergue, it locks a narrow and oblong inner courtyard. Over the centuries, it has undergone important transformations: its ditches have been filled, its mâchicoulis dismantled, its bays enlarged, and its interior decor restored. A round tower marks the southwest corner, while a square tower flanks the north facade. Two turrets frame the northeast corner, and a protruding pavilion, the probable vestige of the former dungeon, stands at the southwest corner. The entrance, originally to the east, was renovated in the 17th century with a basket handle door framed with pilasters and a rotating staircase.

Until the 16th century, the castle belonged to the Herail family, whose last heiress married a member of the family of Carcassonne. This change of ownership marks a transition in the history of the domain. In 1986, facades, roofs, terraces, stairs and the castle park were listed as historical monuments by order of 18 June. The site, now privately owned, is not accessible to the public. Protected elements also include the commons and terraces with their stairs, reflecting the heritage importance of the architectural complex.

The castle of Lugans illustrates the evolution of medieval fortifications into seigneurial residences, characteristic of the Rouergue. Its architecture combines defensive traces (round tower, remains of the dungeon) with later developments, such as the 17th century gate. The accuracy of its location is assessed as very satisfactory (note 8/10), and it is referenced in the Merimée database under Insee code 12107. Available photographs, such as Krzysztof Golik's Creative Commons license, document its current state, preserved despite successive transformations.
