Origin and history

The castle of Madières, mentioned from the ninth century under this name, occupied a strategic position overlooking the valley of Rogues. Its rectangular plane, reinforced by three angle towers, reflects its initial defensive role. The eastern gate, with a steep edge, and the south facades with arched galleries illustrate additions from the 16th–15th centuries, combining military and residential functions. The two inner courtyards, structured by arches in the middle of the wall and a monumental staircase, organize the traffic between the levels, while a vaulted passage at the cross-wall serves the northern part.

Inside, the chapel on the first floor preserves fragments of murals, testimonies of the religious developments of the site. The gypsum-shaped windows, typical of the Gothic and Renaissance periods, highlight the architectural evolution of the castle. Ranked Historic Monument in 1986 for its facades, roofs and a large room with fireplace, the estate now belongs to a private company. Its history reflects the transformation of a medieval building into a seigneurial residence, marked by successive adaptations to defensive and aesthetic needs.

The location of the castle, in the Gard (Occitanie), makes it a representative example of the Languedoc fortifications remodeled in modern and classical times. The protected elements, such as the harness or the galleries, highlight the ingenuity of the facilities intended to reconcile safety and comfort. Although the sources do not specify its current accessibility, its listing as Historic Monuments guarantees the preservation of this emblematic heritage of the valley.
