Origin and history

Mantoche Castle, located in the department of Haute-Saône in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, finds its origins before 1600. A first building already existed at this site, reflecting an ancient occupation. This original castle was thoroughly redesigned at the beginning of the seventeenth century, marking a first phase of major architectural transformation.

In the 18th century, the castle underwent extensive work, including the expansion of its southern wing during the first half of the century. Around 1770 the north wing was built, complementing the current structure. These modifications have kept a remarkable set of interior decorations, including panelling, parquet floors and chimneys characteristic of this period.

Mantoche Castle was officially recognized for its heritage value in 1997, when it was listed as historic monuments. This protection includes not only the main building, but also its outbuildings and fences, stressing the importance of its architectural and landscape integrity. Today, there remains a significant example of the evolution of castles in Franche-Comté between the 17th and 18th centuries.
