Origin and history
Marin Castle is an emblematic building of the second half of the 16th century, marked by the construction of many fortified houses in the suburbs of Auch. These residences, although designed for defence, incorporate comfort elements reflecting the evolution of the lifestyles of the local aristocracy. The monument is distinguished by its rectangular plan, surrounded by a tower of staircase with screws whose top floor houses a dovecote, symbol of social status at the time.
The south facade of the castle is divided into two unequal wings by a hexagonal tower, highlighting arches in braid and a cruciform window, characteristic of Renaissance architecture. The west façade, on the other hand, underwent a change in modern times, partially altering its original appearance. This castle illustrates the transition between medieval defensive needs and Renaissance residential aspirations.
Ranked as historical monuments since 11 April 1973 for its facades and roofs, the Château de Marin bears witness to the architectural and heritage importance of this period in the Gers. Its location on the outskirts of Auch, close to the Pessan road, underscores its role in the rural and seigneurial landscape of the period, between agricultural farm and noble residence.
