Origin and history

The castle of Menétru-le-Vignoble, classified as a Historical Monument, illustrates the architecture of the 15th and 16th centuries. It consists of buildings arranged around a square courtyard, flanked by towers at the corners. This type of plan, common in the Renaissance, reflects a desire for symmetry and moderate defence, adapted to the residential needs of the era.

Later changes marked its history: a portal and entrance door added in the seventeenth century, as well as a metal balcony installed in the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries. These developments demonstrate a gradual adaptation to the tastes and practical needs of the occupants, without fundamentally altering the original structure.

The castle was partially protected by a registration order in 1997, covering in particular the L-house body with its two towers, the entrance gate, and part of the communes. These elements retain traces of the different eras of transformation, offering a representative example of the architectural evolution of seigneurial houses in Franche-Comté.

Located in Menétru-le-Vignoble in the Jura, the monument is part of a territory marked by a wine and rural history. Such castles often served as local administrative and economic centres, playing a key role in the organisation of surrounding land and agricultural activities.
