Origin and history

Mercastel Castle, located in the commune of Villers-Vermont (Oise, Hauts-de-France), is a monument dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The architectural elements still visible today, such as facades, roofs, moats and the chapel, testify to its historical importance and evolution throughout these two centuries. The site has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1966, attesting to its heritage value and the need to preserve its original features.

The building of the castle is part of a period marked by the emergence of aristocratic residences in Picardia, a region then influenced by the social and economic transformations of the Old Regime. The castles of that time often served as places of power, representation and management of the surrounding lands. In Villers-Vermont, as in other rural villages, these buildings played a central role in the local organization, sometimes hosting agricultural, judicial or religious activities.

Mercastel Castle was partially protected by decree of 8 December 1966, covering its facades, roofs, entrance gate, moats and chapel. This inscription in the Merimée base highlights the architectural and historical interest of the site, while allowing its conservation for future generations. Available coordinates place the monument at the approximate address of 4 Mercastel, confirming its anchoring in the local landscape.
